Directed by Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight is a cynical movie. Playing with human emotions to push the imagination of what could happen. Being set in a new york like city called Gotham. Making the movie feel more real. With Nolans expertise of film techniques, He uses a range of them to create a suspenseful atmosphere of not knowing what could happen next. The scene I am talking about is one of the most cynical scenes in the movie where Nolan uses the names as a sign of how if they lose it Gotham would crumble to pieces. Leaving bombs in each boat and the other boat detonator letting the people choose who dies and who survives. Calling the boats liberty and spirit was a great way to show how Gotham is rotten in its core if one boat blows up the city its name blows up with it.

The joker is not like most criminals he doesn’t want money power. He just wants chaos. Hench his self made nickname “agent of chaos”. He makes this big plan just to prove that without law and order the world would turn to chaos. The joker is a cynical criminal that out all his effort to bring down Gotham and show that humans are not good people. His only desire is to prove the fault of humanity, not caring for other people. This is almost the case for joker as Nolan made it look like one of the prisoners was ready about to kill the civilians however not the case. This just shows that prisons do still have good in them. They are not all lost hope like a leech sucking the blood from a dead sheep. This really shows that there is a massive shine of hope of both the boats showing there is more than themselves that all they think of. Meanwhile, on liberty, the civilians were arguing about why should prisoners get a second chance when they lost that when they went to jail which is exactly what the Joker wants people to think. One for none, all for none. On the boat, liberty one guy goes to blow up the other ship but this little sense in the back of his brain makes him put into reality what he is about to do and see he would be no better than the joker himself just falling straight into his crooked twisted plan. If the Joker was to complete his experiment Gotham would crumble at its core. Showing that society without order would bring chaos and there would be no coming back after the order had been lost.

Nolan uses different costumes to show the unique difference in characters from the Joker to Batman. Nolan makes the joker dress up in these wild vivid colour to show that he is insane. This is a reflection on the Joker’s personality as he is clinically insane.  His suit is custom fit to show he is not just a low-level thug. He is more mainstream and a higher class of criminals. As you would not see a low life thug dressed up in a fancy suit with vivid colours. Really putting the difference between the joker and most criminals. However, Batman wears this sleek stealth black suit. Fulled with small gadgets ready to be used. Batman has a really simple but useful outfit. It shows that Batman is more focused on combat than anything else and the joker is more focus on the mental side of things. This is a big part of the movie showing that Batman is the serious character. Also, Nolan uses the people on the boats. With having the criminals in chains and orange jumpsuits and the civilians in mufti. Showing there is a difference in them. How the criminals have lost there right to freedom and rights and the civilians have lost nothing.

Lighting is a key part of any movie changing it could mean a difference of a happy movie to a dark twisted movie. Nolan uses lighting in a clever way in this scene as he never has Batman in full light or full dark. This is because Batman is called a vigilantly as he has the right ideas but does criminal actions to get it done. This is a great way to show it as light generally mean hope or good and dark generally mean evil. Using this on Batman really shows that he is a good guy but does bad things. Nolan also uses this for the boat as he has them in low key lighting as they are a good thing but bad things are going to happen. Having a light on them means there is still spirit and liberty in Gotham but with it also being dimmed shows that it is on the brink of losing it and with one blowing up the other would be lost as well.

In conclusion, the dark night is a great watch with some wicked scenes that you can get really into it and get deep with it. The scene its self has so many interesting characters with deep thoughts and amazing skills of light to boost the effect on the viewers. Nolan use of suspenseful scenes greatly improves the watch of the dark night.
