Shawshank

The film Shawshank Redemption is Directed by Frank Darabont, is about a banker named Andy Dufresne is convicted of murdering his wife with a sentence of two consecutive life sentences to serve at the Shawshank State Penitentiary. He is soon befriended by Red, an inmate and contraband smuggler, serving a life sentence. This movie sends themes about intensity hope. These themes produce a bigger meaning to the movie and allow deep relationships with the characters and thicken the plot of the movie. The Director does not lead on about whether not Andy is innocent or not which indeed leads the audience to keep watching and find out more. Wanting to find out more about the character Andy Dufresne and what keeps him want to live through the dark horrors of prison life. Andy was quick to get a rock hammer to engrave his name into the wall but then finds the concrete was old and was easily destroyed. Leading his way to escape.

“You eat when we say you eat, You shit when we say u shit ” This quote from Andy shows the intensity of the film The Shawshank Redemption. Andy at first is raped repeatedly by the sisters before friending the guards by saving their money from taxes from his brothers will. Andy asked to do get beers for the Red and his boys after a long day on the roof for saving his money. from this friendship with the guards, the sisters get dealt with. This all happened within the ¼ way through in the movie. With the audience of thinking the sisters where the man bad guy and them gone. Norton the Warden makes his way into the spotlight. Warden is lead to believe that he is a good guy but in fact, he is the opposite. Norton is constantly preaching the bible with reading out quotes. He says he believes in two things “discipline and the Bible” and that inmates will receive both. Warden was rather intense as in every scene he was in he was above everyone. Meanwhile, Andy is forced to do all the guards banking to save them money if he doesn’t he would be beaten or killed. Pushing the theme of intensity. With all this happening in just a short couple of years Andy having to go through all of this and can’t get out of it. Scene after scene the plot thickens with it all revolving around Andy. The use of intensity really involves the audience makes them intrigued in the plot and symphony for the characters.

Hope is a powerful thing for people that don’t have it can be the difference between life and death in some cases. having hope which is what kept Andy alive. oxford dictionary states that hope means “Grounds for believing that something good may happen.” for Andy to keep hope for 19 years is a remarkable achievement. as most prisoners lose sight of hope within the first couple of years of being locked up. As you can see with Red when he loses sight of hope after his first parole. After being denied Red comes to the peace he would never leave Shawshank leading him to not worry about the afterlife of prison. Brooks the librarian lost hope years before Andy arrived there leading him into becoming institutionalized and not wanting to leave Shawshank. Later on, he got parole which meant he had to work at a supermarket however Brooks has arthritis and not being in jail leads him to hang himself. After Andy was getting repeatedly getting raped from the sisters day after day he still carried his head high knowing that one day he would get out not losing sight of the bigger picture. The movie uses hope to show how important it is to have hope. In the scene when Andy is in the hole and Warden shows up to force him to help with his evil plans of free labour and smuggling of money. You can see that Andy has hope with the light shining on Andy and the Warden being in the dark, showing that he is evil and Andy being the good guy. In the end, the Director plays the movie like Andy lost hope by asking his friends for rope and a plastic bag. Portraying it to be as Andy was going to kill himself. Making the audience believe Andy had finally lost hope once again making the audience hooked on the movie wanting to know more.

In conclusion, this is a great movie for all ages. The way the Director made this movie shift you through emotions from feeling like Andy full of hope to going like he has lost sight in hope and is ready to kill himself. Also with the Director pushing themes across like hope to show how important it is to have to survive harsh living conditions like what the prisoners had to do living in Shawshank. Another theme was intensity which informed what it was like to go to jail in prison back then. How scary it would be to live in Shawshank and how easy it would be able to lose sight of hope.  In my opinion, this is one of the best movies about redemption and send great messages of why you would want to stay out of prison as you lose all of your freedom and end up losing hope. By losing hope you lose you will too live.
